Collagen Supplements: What Does the Evidence Actually Say?

Collagen supplements are popular for skin, joints, hair and nails. Some human studies are encouraging, but the evidence is mixed and not every product is equivalent. Here is what we know about hydrolysed collagen, marine sources and realistic expectations.

Collagen Supplements: What Does the Evidence Actually Say?

Collagen has become one of the biggest categories in beauty and wellness supplements.

Powders and drinks are promoted for smoother skin, stronger hair and nails, healthier joints and sometimes much more.

There is genuine research behind oral collagen.

But there is also a tendency to take an encouraging study and turn it into a much bigger promise than the evidence supports.

So what happens when you actually take collagen, and what can we reasonably expect from it?

The short version

Collagen is a structural protein found throughout the body, including in skin, bone, cartilage, tendons and other connective tissues.

Collagen supplements usually contain collagen that has been hydrolysed, meaning it has been broken into smaller peptides.

Human studies show that after hydrolysed collagen is consumed, amino acids and some small collagen-derived peptides can appear in the bloodstream. That tells us the supplement is digested and absorbed. It does not mean the collagen travels intact directly to your skin or joints.

Research into skin has produced some encouraging results, particularly for hydration and elasticity, but the evidence is less certain than many adverts suggest. A 2025 meta-analysis found apparent benefits when all trials were combined, but those benefits disappeared in higher-quality studies and studies without pharmaceutical-industry funding. A 2026 systematic review similarly described the evidence as preliminary and noted that many trials had a high risk of bias.

There is also evidence suggesting collagen supplements may improve pain and function in people with knee osteoarthritis. That does not mean everyone needs collagen for healthy joints.

Marine collagen simply means the collagen comes from marine sources, usually fish. It should not automatically be assumed to be more effective or better absorbed than collagen from other sources.

What is collagen?

Collagen is one of the body's main structural proteins.

Rather than doing one single job, it forms part of the framework of many tissues, including:

  • skin
  • cartilage
  • bone
  • tendons
  • ligaments
  • blood vessels

The body makes its own collagen using amino acids and other nutrients.

Ageing, sun exposure and other factors can affect collagen within the skin over time. That is one reason collagen supplements have become particularly popular in the beauty market.

What is hydrolysed collagen?

Whole collagen is a large protein.

When collagen is hydrolysed, it is broken down into smaller chains of amino acids called peptides. You may therefore see products described as hydrolysed collagen, collagen hydrolysate or collagen peptides.

These terms are closely related.

Hydrolysis makes the protein easier to disperse and changes the size of the peptides, but it is important not to turn that into the claim that a product will automatically be "rapidly delivered" to your skin or joints.

Human absorption studies show that collagen consumption increases levels of collagen-associated amino acids and small peptides in the blood. A 2024 crossover study found measurable absorption from fish, porcine and bovine collagen hydrolysates.

That is evidence of absorption.

What happens after absorption, and whether it produces a noticeable benefit, is a separate question.

Does taking collagen improve your skin?

This is where much of the research has focused.

Several earlier systematic reviews and meta-analyses found improvements in measures such as skin hydration and elasticity after oral hydrolysed collagen supplementation.

At first glance, that sounds fairly conclusive.

More recent analyses have raised important questions about the quality of that evidence.

A 2025 meta-analysis examined 23 randomised controlled trials involving 1,474 participants. When all studies were pooled, collagen appeared to improve skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.

However, when the researchers looked specifically at higher-quality trials, the improvements were no longer significant. The same happened when they looked at studies that had not received pharmaceutical-industry funding.

A 2026 systematic review of 25 randomised trials reached a cautious conclusion too. Many individual trials reported improvements, but most of the studies were judged to have a high risk of bias, and the researchers called for larger, better-designed and longer-term trials.

So the fairest interpretation is:

Collagen may have benefits for some measures of skin health, but the size and reliability of those effects are still uncertain.

That is quite different from saying collagen has been proven to reverse skin ageing.

What about wrinkles and ageing?

Some collagen studies have reported changes in wrinkle depth or appearance.

But skin ageing is affected by many things, including genetics, sun exposure, smoking, nutrition and age itself.

No supplement stops that process.

Sun protection, avoiding smoking, getting adequate nutrition and looking after your skin remain much more established parts of maintaining skin health than relying on a collagen powder.

A supplement may be something you choose to add, but it should not be presented as a way to "rebuild" youthful skin.

Can collagen help your joints?

There is interesting evidence here too, particularly in people who already have osteoarthritis.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 11 randomised controlled trials and 870 participants with knee osteoarthritis. Overall, collagen supplementation was associated with improvements in pain and physical function compared with placebo.

That is encouraging.

But there is an important distinction between:

helping symptoms in people with a particular joint condition

and

preventing joint problems in healthy people.

The first has been studied.

The second is a much broader claim.

Someone with persistent joint pain should not use a supplement as a substitute for finding out what is causing it.

What about hair and nails?

Collagen is frequently marketed as a combined skin, hair and nail supplement.

The evidence is much less developed here.

There have been some studies and reviews reporting possible improvements in hair or nail outcomes, but the overall research base is small, heterogeneous and often involves products containing more than collagen alone. A 2026 review concluded that evidence across skin, hair and nails remains limited by short studies, differing formulations and industry funding.

So it is reasonable for researchers to keep investigating those areas.

It is harder to justify promising that collagen will make everyone's hair thicker or nails stronger.

Is marine collagen better than bovine collagen?

Not necessarily.

Marine collagen simply describes collagen derived from marine sources, commonly fish skin or other fish material.

Bovine collagen usually comes from cattle.

Other collagen sources also exist.

Different sources can have different amino-acid and peptide profiles, but there is no good reason to assume that the word "marine" automatically means superior absorption or better results.

A 2023 meta-analysis of skin studies did not find a significant difference between collagen sources for skin elasticity, although results for hydration varied between subgroups.

In practice, the exact formulation, dose, peptide characteristics and evidence behind that preparation are likely to matter more than simply whether the word "marine" appears on the label.

Dietary requirements matter too.

Marine collagen is fish-derived, so it is not vegetarian or vegan.

Does molecular weight matter?

You may also see collagen products promoted as having a particularly "low molecular weight".

Smaller peptides can affect digestion and absorption characteristics, and this is an active area of research.

But molecular weight should not be treated like a league table where the lowest number automatically means the best supplement.

A human study comparing collagen hydrolysates from different sources and molecular weights found absorption from all of the preparations studied. The researchers concluded that larger studies are still needed to understand what concentrations of circulating peptides are actually needed to produce particular effects in tissues.

So molecular-weight information can be useful formulation detail.

It is not, by itself, proof that one product will produce better skin or joint outcomes.

Why is vitamin C often added to collagen products?

Vitamin C has a genuine biological connection with collagen.

The body needs vitamin C as part of normal collagen synthesis. Severe vitamin C deficiency impairs collagen formation, which is one reason scurvy affects connective tissues and wound healing.

That makes vitamin C a sensible nutrient to think about when discussing collagen.

But there is an important distinction.

Vitamin C being necessary for normal collagen production does not mean that continually increasing your vitamin C intake will continually increase collagen production.

Once again, more is not automatically better.

Do collagen supplements replace dietary protein?

No.

Collagen is a protein, but it has a particular amino-acid profile and should not be thought of as a complete substitute for a varied dietary protein intake.

Foods such as fish, meat, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and seeds can all contribute protein and other nutrients to the diet.

A collagen supplement is an addition to that diet, not a replacement for eating properly.

Is marine collagen safe?

Collagen supplements are generally well tolerated in clinical studies, but the source matters.

Marine collagen is derived from fish.

That means anyone with a fish allergy should not assume that hydrolysing the collagen removes the allergy risk.

Research has shown that fish collagen itself can act as an allergen in some people with fish allergy.

Always check the allergen information rather than assuming a powdered supplement no longer contains relevant fish proteins.

So, is collagen worth taking?

There is no single answer for everyone.

Collagen is not a nonsense ingredient. It has been studied in humans, collagen-derived peptides are absorbed after consumption, and some clinical research has produced encouraging results for skin and joint outcomes.

But the research also has limitations.

Some areas rely heavily on small or industry-funded trials. Different studies use different preparations and doses. Recent higher-quality analyses have been much less confident about some of the skin benefits frequently promoted online.

That leaves us somewhere more sensible than either extreme.

You do not need to believe collagen is miraculous.

You do not need to pretend there is no research at all.

If you choose to take it, do so with realistic expectations and pay attention to what is actually in the product rather than the promises surrounding it.
